Course overview:

Despite legal protection under the Equality Act 2010, people with learning disabilities often face discrimination and prejudice. This course will challenge some of the preconceptions and stereotypes and enable participants to improve the service they offer to customers with learning disabilities, or to better support a learning disabled employee.

 

Target audience:

Any person who offers a service to the public, or who employs someone with a learning disability

 

Aims:

  • To increase participants’ knowledge of what it means to have a learning disability
  • To enable participants to communicate more effectively with people with learning disabilities

 

Outcomes:

By the end of the session you will:

  • Understand what is meant by the term ‘learning disability’
  • Understand the public perception of people with learning disabilities and the impact that may have on the individual
  • Understand how the Equality Act 2010 relates to people with learning disabilities, and your  legal responsibilities
  • Be aware of some communication difficulties for people with learning disabilities and have practiced strategies and techniques to improve communication
